Introduction

Situated in the remote Damodar Himal near Mustang and a stone’s throw from the Tibetan border, Mount Saribung Peak (6,346m) is a recently introduced mountain expedition that offers trekkers the challenge of summiting a rarely-climbed peak combined with adventurous trekking in a rugged and remote region that sees few trekkers. This is a strenuous trek that combines high peaks and passes, glaciers, remote valleys and villages, unique Himalayan cultures and some of the most spectacular scenery on earth.

We start our journey with a trek through the restricted area of Upper Mustang, a remote and starkly beautiful region, that is part of the Tibetan plateau. Hiking through an otherworldly landscape of sculpted canyons, surreal rock formations, medieval villages, ruined fortresses, royal palaces, Tibetan Buddhist gompas, and soaring snow peaks, we will reach the fabled Mustang capital, Lo Manthang and spend some time exploring this fascinating place before heading east into the wild Namta Khola Valley to reach Saribung. After summiting Saribung, we cross the Saribung La (pass) and descend through the remote Nar-Phu Valley, before finishing in the village of Syange.

This expedition is not a technical climb but is considered a challenging expedition because of the altitude variation and the remoteness of the area. There are many passes with ice and crevasses in between the Damodar Kunda (lake) and the Nar-Phu valley. These will require glacier travel mode for the most part with a couple of sections at most of fixed-line requiring the use of a jumar. Previous experience with crampons and ice ax is necessary.
