This is a great opportunity to ask questions and ensure you are fully prepared. Enjoy your first night in Nepal as you soak in the lively atmosphere of the city.
Today is dedicated to exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu Valley with a knowledgeable guide and private van. You'll visit landmarks such as the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site, and Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in the world. The tour also includes a visit to Patan Durbar Square or Bhaktapur Durbar Square, showcasing stunning Newari architecture and centuries-old palaces. These cultural experiences provide a deeper understanding of Nepal’s rich history, art, and religious traditions. After a fulfilling day, you'll return to your hotel to prepare for the trek.
Your day starts with a thrilling helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, often called one of the most exciting airports in the world. The flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, setting the tone for your adventure. Upon landing in Lukla, you'll meet the trekking crew and begin your journey toward Phakding. The trail descends through lush green forests, crosses suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, and passes small villages and prayer wheels. After 3-4 hours of walking, you’ll arrive at Phakding, a charming village with cozy tea houses. Take the evening to relax and soak in the serene surroundings.
The trek begins with a steady walk along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges adorned with colorful prayer flags. You’ll pass through beautiful villages like Monjo and enter Sagarmatha National Park, where permits are checked. As the trail ascends steeply toward Namche, the views of the surrounding mountains, including Thamserku (6608m), become increasingly spectacular. After 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant trading hub of the Khumbu region. The evening is perfect for exploring the market or relaxing.
To adjust to the altitude, you'll spend the day acclimatizing in Namche. A short hike to the Everest View Hotel (3962m) offers panoramic views of Everest (8848m), Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. After enjoying the views, visit Khumjung and Khunde villages, where you can explore the local lifestyle and visit the Khumjung Monastery, which houses a Yeti skull. Return to Namche Bazaar for the evening.
The day starts with a short trek to Pangboche village, the highest permanent settlement in the Khumbu region. From here, you’ll hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp (4600m), which offers awe-inspiring views of Ama Dablam (6856m) and other peaks. After a 5-6 hour round trip, return to Pangboche for the night.
Leaving Pangboche, the trail takes you through alpine forests and scenic landscapes toward Phortse. This quiet village offers a glimpse into traditional Sherpa life and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a peaceful 3-4 hour trek, perfect for enjoying the natural beauty of the region.
The trail descends through dense forests and along ridge lines, offering chances to spot wildlife like Himalayan pheasants and musk deer. After 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive back in Namche Bazaar, where you can relax and reflect on your journey.
Retrace your steps along the Dudh Koshi River, passing familiar villages and enjoying final views of the mountains. This 6-7 hour trek concludes your walking adventure as you arrive in Lukla, where you’ll celebrate your journey with the trekking team.

Kathmandu and 12 night trek
Thank you Expedition Himalaya for organising us a fabulous adventure. We were greeted at the airport by Expedition Himalaya and transferred to our hotel in a nice vehicle. The company kept in regular contact with us to see if we needed any sightseeing, guides and nights out arranged. Our trek was tailored to our needs with excellent guides and porters. We took a long jeep ride to Ringmo and trekked through the Tamang lands through to Phakding and then on up to the Sagamatha National Park. We also used helicopters back down to Lukla which meant we could get further in the time we had. The company have sample itineraries on their website as a guide.
