Introduction

This 5-day tour is a wonderful introduction to Best of Kathmandu, showcasing the many facets of the town and surrounding valley. The major sites of Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath illustrate Kathmandu’s mixed religious heritage while the towns of Bhaktapur and Patan showcase the wonderful craftsmanship that has existed in the Kathmandu valley for centuries, a tradition that continues today.
From Nagarkot, in the Himalayan foothills, the view of sunrise over the Himalayas shows off the spectacular natural beauty of Nepal, while an excursion around the Royal Botanical Garden reveals the country’s rich and varied plant species. This is a memorable tour that shows a side of the Kathmandu Valley beyond the tourist enclave of Thamel.

Itinerary

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by the bustling atmosphere of Nepal’s vibrant capital. After settling into your accommodation, take some time to explore the nearby streets, getting a first glimpse of the city's rich culture and daily life. Kathmandu is a blend of ancient traditions and modern influences, offering a unique experience for every traveler. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to visit a local market or enjoy a traditional Nepali meal. As the day winds down, relax and prepare for an exciting journey ahead.

Begin your exploration of Kathmandu with visits to some of its most revered spiritual landmarks. Start with Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu site dedicated to Lord Shiva, where rituals along the Bagmati River provide deep cultural insights. Next, visit Boudhanath, a massive stupa and a major center for Tibetan Buddhism, where you can observe monks in prayer and spin prayer wheels. The day continues with a visit to Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, which sits atop a hill and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valley. As evening falls, immerse yourself in the lively streets of Thamel, known for its restaurants, shops, and vibrant nightlife.

Dive deeper into the cultural wonders of the Kathmandu Valley by visiting the ancient cities of Patan and Bhaktapur. Patan, also known as Lalitpur, is famous for its well-preserved temples, intricate wood carvings, and rich artistic heritage. Bhaktapur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivates visitors with its medieval charm, stunning palace squares, and traditional pottery-making workshops. After exploring these historic gems, embark on a scenic drive to Nagarkot, a hilltop village renowned for its spectacular views of the Himalayas. Spend the evening admiring the sunset over the mountain range and preparing for an early morning sunrise experience.

Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas from Nagarkot, a truly unforgettable sight as the peaks gradually light up in golden hues. After breakfast, set out on a scenic hike to Sankhu, a traditional Newari village surrounded by lush greenery and terraced fields. As you walk through rural landscapes, you will encounter local farmers, ancient temples, and picturesque countryside views, offering a glimpse into Nepal’s traditional way of life. The hike provides a refreshing contrast to the city’s energy, allowing you to experience the serene beauty of the Kathmandu Valley. After reaching Sankhu, return to Kathmandu and enjoy your final evening in the capital.

On your final day, take in the last moments of Kathmandu’s charm before heading to the airport for your departure. If time permits, explore a local market for souvenirs or enjoy a relaxed morning at a café, reminiscing about the incredible experiences of the past few days. This journey through the Kathmandu Valley has offered a perfect blend of spiritual heritage, artistic craftsmanship, breathtaking landscapes, and rural beauty. As you leave, you will carry unforgettable memories of Nepal’s rich culture and warm hospitality, leaving you with a desire to return and explore more of this fascinating country.
