Introduction

One of the three major trekking peaks within the Annapurna Sanctuary, Hiunchuli (6,441m) forms a formidable south-facing wall together with Annapurna South. Its eastern face overlooks the Modi Khola and guards the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Climbing of Mount Hiunchuli Peak is considered one of the most complex of the trekking peaks to climb despite its relatively low altitude.

Though not technically difficult, the mountain has a reputation for being prone to avalanche, rock fall and route finding difficulty as avalanches swipe the old trail every season. There is no obvious ‘standard’ line up and the mountain which is best tackled in true expedition style. The most common approaches are via the Southeast Face or Northwest Face though the latter is seldom attempted. An American Peace Corps Expedition first climbed Hiunchuli in October 1971 via the Southeast Face.

Even though the mountain offers significant potential for new routes, Expedition of Mount Hiunchuli Peak has received little attention from mountaineers and is rarely climbed. But, easy to access and with limited altitude, the climb offers excellent Himalayan mountaineering in less than three weeks for experienced climbers.
