Introduction

Mount Ama Dablam, also known as "Mother's Necklace" in the Sherpa language, is a stunning mountain standing at an altitude of 6,812 meters (22,349 ft). Located in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal, Ama Dablam offers breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, the world's highest mountain, and Mt. Lhotse, the fourth highest. Known for its remarkable beauty and technical challenges, it has become a sought-after peak for climbers.

The first successful ascent of Ama Dablam was achieved on March 13, 1961, by a team of four climbers: Mike Gill, Barry Bishop, Mike Ward, and Wally Romanes. They climbed via the Southwest Ridge, which has since become the standard route for most expeditions. Climbing Ama Dablam in winter is considered exceptionally challenging due to harsh weather, extreme cold, unpredictable climatic conditions, and high winds. Despite these difficulties, three South Korean mountaineers—Nam Sun-Woo, Lim Byung-Kil, and Kim Young-Soo—successfully summited the mountain on December 5, 1983.

Itinerary

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you’ll be greeted by a representative and escorted to your hotel. After the check-in process, take some time to rest or explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu. In the evening, attend a briefing about the upcoming expedition.

This day is dedicated to finalizing preparations for your expedition. While the team handles permits and gear checks, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Boudhanath Stupa and the historic Swayambhunath Temple.

Enjoy a scenic flight to Lukla, known as the gateway to the Everest region. Begin your trek with a gentle hike through forests and small villages, arriving at Phakding by the afternoon. Relax and prepare for the next day’s journey.

Cross suspension bridges and trek along the Dudh Koshi River, ascending through pine forests. Reach Namche Bazaar, a bustling Sherpa town, where you’ll stay overnight.

Take a rest day to acclimatize. Explore Namche Bazaar, visit local museums, or hike to nearby viewpoints for stunning view of Everest and Ama Dablam.

Continue trekking through rhododendron forests and along the river, passing the famous Tengboche Monastery before reaching Debuche.

A relatively short trek takes you to Pangboche, a traditional Sherpa village offering close-up views of Ama Dablam.

Leave the main trail and head toward Ama Dablam Base Camp. The hike includes gradual ascents with spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The climbing period involves acclimatization rotations, establishing higher camps, and a final summit push. With the guidance of Sherpas and support staff, you’ll climb amidst snow slopes, ridges, and rock sections to reach the summit of Ama Dablam.

Descend from base camp to Pangboche, enjoying the easier trek and celebrating your achievement.

Retrace your steps to Namche Bazaar, passing through forests and crossing rivers. Take the evening to relax in the bustling town.

On the final trekking day, descend to Lukla, enjoying the lush scenery and reflecting on your journey.

Take an early flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and spend the day at leisure or exploring the city.

Spend this day relaxing, shopping for souvenirs, or visiting additional cultural sites. Enjoy the comforts of the city after your expedition.

On the final day, the team will assist with your transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home. Depart with unforgettable memories of your adventure.

Excellent Expedition Logistics

Expedition Himalaya is the company my regular US-based expedition operator has been working with for years. Over the last 10 years, Nabin and his team have also organized several mountaineering expeditions for me personally, including ones to Ganchenpo, Cholatse and Pumori. I have been happy with his and his team's work every time.

I have found Expedition Himalaya to be professional and well-connected in the industry. They have excellent staff across the board, and can make things (like sending helicopters, arranging PCR tests or booking accommodation) happen quickly, efficiently and at a reasonable price.
