1. First eight-thousander to be conquered
Mount Annapurna is the first 8000 clubs Mountain to be climbed. French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal were the ones to scale the mountain for the first time.
2. Annapurna – massif of the mountain
It is not just a single mountain alike Everest, Dhaulagiri, etc. Annapurna is the name given collectively to the massif of Mountains. Among which Annapurna I is the one making into the club of 8000m with an elevation of 8091m.
3. First Ascent of Mount Annapurna
The first ascent was done by the French expedition team. Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal ascent the mountain from the north face on the date of June 3, 1950. However, it cost them a lot. Both climbers caught by frostbite and had to amputate all toes with Herzog losing his hand too.
4. Only eight-thousander to be conquered on the first try
Herzog and Lachenal made another history that day, as they become the first climbers to summit the 8000m mountain on the first try. Their summit makes Mount Annapurna the only 8000m mountain in the world to be conquered on the first ascent that too even without supplemental oxygen.
5. Too Risky to climb
Though being the tenth highest mountain in the world, the difficulty it posses makes it one of the most difficult mountains to climb. The fatality rate of mount Annapurna is 38% which is much higher than the Mount Everest fatality rate which is 6.5%.
6. Summit got Limestone
Limestone is believed to be formed at the bottom of the ocean. So, the possible explanation would be due to the massive force of the tectonic plate, mountains get elevated to a higher altitude. Apart from the Mount Annapurna, Mount Everest and Mount Dhaulagiri have also got limestone on its summit.
7. Adjacent to the Deepest George
Mount Annapurna falls on Annapurna range, away from Mount Dhaulagiri ( world’s seventh highest mountain ). What separates Mount Annapurna from Mount Dhaulagiri is the gorge made by the Kali Gandaki River. The gorge is supposed to be the world’s deepest gorge.
8. Meaning of Annapurna
The literal meaning of Annapurna translates to “Goddess of the Harvests” or the “The provider”. Locals believe that the Goddess resides in the mountains.

After the ascent of Mount Annapurna, one of the first summiteers, Maurice Herzog wrote a book describing his experience about the expedition on Mount Annapurna. This book sold over 11 million copies worldwide thus making it the best selling climbing book of all time.
